Art 1

Art 1 is a beginning art course that explores drawing, painting techniques and some 3D applications. Students will learn about and meet the National Core Arts Standards. The Principles of Art and the Elements of Design will be explored, as well as Art History and cultures. Students will create a portfolio of artwork. This course will establish a strong base for students to build upon in their progress toward becoming creative thinkers and innovators.
Art 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 or Digital Arts or teacher recommendation
Art 2 is an intermediate level course for students interested in improving their artistic and creative abilities. Students will build upon National Core Arts Standards, principals, elements and concepts learned in Art 1 to further develop a portfolio of work representative of their own artistic style. Students will pursue an advanced level of creative thinking and problem solving. Innovators of the future will be able to express themselves through a wide variety of media, and explore additional cultures and historic periods of Art.
Studio Art

Advanced art and mixed media class for the highly motivated student. Students will experience the use of a variety of art techniques, styles and exhibition opportunities and create an extensive portfolio. Students will pursue an advanced level of creative thinking and problem solving. Innovators of the future will be encouraged to express themselves through a wide variety of media, while meeting the National Core Arts Standards.
AP Studio Art: 2D Design

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 2 or teacher recommendation
Studio Art AP is an advanced level art class where students continue to develop their personal portfolio. Students work to master techniques unique to their artistic interests while studying a variety of artists from past Masters to present professional artists. National Core Arts Standards will be met at a higher level.*AP students will prepare portfolio for AP Review/exam.
IB Visual Arts SL

Advanced art course (honors level) for highly motivated students to create college-level work. Course includes written analysis of visual arts, art history and the study of various cultures. Exciting advancement in students' journey toward becoming more creative thinking innovators happens in this course. An extensive portfolio of unique works of Art will be developed. This class will prepare the student for the IB standard level exam and/or AP exam.
IB Visual Arts HL
2nd year of the IB Art sequence

Year two of advanced art course (honors level) for highly motivated students to create college-level work. Components of the course include experience with a variety of materials, techniques, styles, creative problem solving, critiques, art history, quality production and exhibits. A sizable portfolio will be further developed by students, with examples of unique works in multiple media. Exciting advancement in students' journey toward becoming more creative thinking innovators happens in this course. This course will prepare the student for the IB higher level exam and/or AP exam.*All Art students will have the opportunity to be a participant in our annual "Chalk Day".
Ceramics 1
Grade Level: 10-12 RBV Graduation: Art UC/CSU A-G: "F"
Prerequisite: None
This course will introduce students to clay properties and processes. Students will work with a variety of hand-building methods including pinch, coil and slab techniques in the creation of functional and sculptural works. Glazing, finishing and surface design will also be addressed. Relevant criticism and art history will be incorporated into 3-dimensional assignments.
Ceramics 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics 1 or teacher recommendation
This course is designed to engage students in more advanced ceramic techniques and projects. Students will develop and enhance skills learned in the Ceramics I class, as well as refine and experiment with new materials and techniques including spending time learning and practicing throwing on the potter's wheel. Advanced students are exposed to various cultural connections throughout the history of ceramics, as well as expanded knowledge of tools and techniques.
3 Dimensional Design and Sculpture 1

This introductory course in 3 dimensional design and sculpture covers the fundamentals of art through working with clay, cardboard, mosaic, paper-mache and other sculpting mediums. Students will learn to design and create 3 dimensional sculptures from sketch to project completion. California state standards are addressed.
3 Dimensional Design and Sculpture 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3D Design 1 or teacher recommendation
3D/Sculpture 2 is for the second year student interested in improving their artistic and creative abilities. Students will expand and grow their sculpting and design abilities, build upon standards, principles and elements beyond the beginning levels in specified mediums such as clay, mosaic, wood and mixed media. This course may be taken for an additional year. (UC "F" approved) * All students will have the opportunity to participate in our annual "Chalk Day".
AP Studio Art: 3-D Sculptural Design

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3D Design 1 & 2 or teacher recommendation
This course is designed for the students who are seriously interested in sculpture. The student's goal in taking this course is to experience a college level art program and to develop a portfolio of sufficient quality to earn credits towards university matriculation. Advanced Placement 3-D Design students will continue their exploration of artistic perception, art production, art history and valuing art under the parameters of the requirements for the Advanced Placement Studio Art portfolio. Emphasis is placed on independent work that is original in all aspects. This course has a prerequisite of 3D Sculptural Design 2, or portfolio approval by the instructor.
Film Studies

This year long elective course examines: Film Theory and History, Creative Process and Techniques and Organization of production. It teaches the various aspects of moviemaking with an emphasis on the artistic and/or social messages that are conveyed through the use of cinematic devices. This class requires students to make sort films.
IB Film Studies SL

This is a yearlong elective course that focuses on three areas of study: Textual Analysis, Film Theory and History, and Creative Process - techniques and organization of production. It teaches the various aspects of moviemaking with an emphasis on the artistic and/or social messages that are conveyed through the use of cinematic devices. The course introduces the various cultural traditions of filmmaking, especially those shared with art and literature. In addition to creating short film projects, comprehensive reading and writing is also required throughout this course. Course prepares students for the IB SL exam.
IB Film Studies HL

IB Film HL is second year of an honors film course that focuses on three areas of study: Filmmaking, Analysis and Film Theory and
History. It teaches moviemaking with an emphasis on the artistic and/or social messages that are conveyed through the use of cinematic devices. The course also covers the history of American and international cinema as well as introducing the traditions of filmmaking. This class prepares students for the IB HL film exam.
