This two period comprehensive language arts and reading intervention program is designed to meet the needs of students whose language arts and reading achievement is below the proficient level. Course will address foundational skills and understanding the reading process. Course utilizes READ 180 technology.

This two period course for students whose language arts and reading achievement falls two or more years below grade level is designed to accelerate student reading achievement. It meets state English 9 standards and integrates Read 180 technology.

AP English Language/Composition 11
1st year of the IB English sequence

This intensive Advanced Placement course covers a survey of American literature, analytical writing, rhetoric, usage, vocabulary, oral language skills in preparation for IB assessment, and intensive work on the expository prose style in preparation for AP Language, PSAT and SAT exams.
English 12 ERW(Expository Reading and Writing)

This course is designed specifically to prepare students for the rigorous demands of reading and writing in the first year of college. The course has a heavy emphasis on the rhetorical thinking, writing, and reading of non-fiction texts that are predominant in post-secondary schools. Though some elements of AP course work will be infused, this course does not provide a weighted grade.

ENGLISH ELECTIVES
Yearbook

A yearlong elective that produces the RBVHS yearbook. Strong computer and writing skills are recommended. This class includes layout and design, advertising, photography and writing. Students will use Adobe Indesign and Photo Shop. Students need to be organized and able to meet deadlines. Outside class time participation required.
Journalism in the Digital Age

Journalism in the Digital Age is a survey of the basic concepts of reporting and non-fiction writing for a variety of media, both electronic and print. Students will examine the relationship of journalism and democracy, as well as practice and develop skills in writing, interviewing, publishing, and producing real-world media pieces. This class will be conducted in a workshop setting allowing students to work hands-on in a collaborative environment that fosters professionalism, creativity, and innovation. Throughout the course, students will be engaged in ongoing discussions about the history of journalism as well as the future direction that this profession will take. Students will learn the fundamentals of journalistic communications while also exploring a variety of creative non-fiction storytelling styles, techniques, and technologies.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing offers students an opportunity for personal expression in a variety of literary forms. The course provides an opportunity to engage students in literature and poetry in an open and creative environment. Classroom activities will include written assignments, selected readings, lecture, group discussion, peer response groups and publication.
